The
Thaipoosam theppam fest of
Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple,
Mylapore, Chennai.
Feb.12-14, 2006.

Mylapore Times Reporters
O!
What a sight the theppam was in Mylapore. A real theppam.
The
festival was held in a tank full of water last in the mid-nineties,
and for the last few years, it has been conducted as a nila
theppam, (stationary float).
"The float was repaired, given a fresh coat of paint
and renovated at a cost of Rs. 1.5 lakhs," said temple
officials.
The big float was placed on 267 barrels tied together, and
decorated. The deities were accompanied by priests reciting
veda parayanam, and thevaram, and a nadaswaram goshti.
The public was allowed to enter the tank, sit on the top steps
and watched the ceremonies.
Free prasadam was distributed at the theppam on all three
days.
The schedule :
On February 12 Sri Kaplaeeswarar and Amman were taken on the
float; on February 13 and on 14, Singaravelar with
Valli-Deyvanai were taken around.
KutcheriBuzz
and Mylapore Times ( a neighbourhood newspaper)
covered the event on all three days.
They will, for people outside Mylapore, share the spirit of
this unique fest.
Do
inform others, especially Mylaporeans abroad, of this special
visual treat!
