Showcasing vintage music
Sampradaya hosts a vintage music festival from Dec. 18 to 29, at Raga Sudha Hall, Luz Avenue, Mylapore.
The nine day series will feature excerpts from rare concerts and interviews of yester-year stalwarts, from Sampradaya's archival holdings. The senior sishyas of these masters will speak on the special aspects of the music of their gurus. This will be followed by a one-hour listening session of the legends. Each concert will conclude with an interactive session -'All you wanted to Know' where the rasikas can participate. The festival will conclude with the documentary film 'A Tryst with Trinity' by Sampradaya.
The yester-year masters who will be featured are Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer & Semmangudi R. Srinivasaier, Tiger Varadachari & M.D. Ramanathan, G.N. Balasubramaniam & M.L.Vasanthakumari, Alathur Brothers, Musiri Subramaniya Iyer, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar & Pudukodu Krishnamurthy, Madurai Mani Iyer, 'Legends of Andhra', 'Great Masters from Vina Dhanammal family' and 'Gems of Mysore Durbar'.
Over the last two decades, Sampradaya has been documenting music traditions, with in-depth interviews with master musicians, getting them at length to talk about their art, the tradition of music they represent, their times, their moments of glory and disappointment, their teaching methodology and interaction with other artistes.
And the vintage music festival will showcase the resource built up by Sampradaya, over the years.
