Sonal Mansingh appointed Chairperson of SNA
Renowned Odissi dancer Sonal Mansingh has taken over as the Chairperson of Sangeet Natak Akademi, the national academy of music, dance and drama, Govt. of India. The Delhi based dancer has been directly appointed by the President of India, A.P.J. abdul Kalam.
Sangeet Natak Akademi was established by a resolution of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, in 1952.
To give recognition to individual artists for outstanding achievement in music, dance and drama was recognised as a function of the Akademi at its inception. The SNA Awards and Fellowships to distinguished artists and scholars have been regarded as the highest national honours in the performing arts since the 1950s.
SNA is also involved in documenting rare artforms and hosting cultural festivals throughout India.
