25 years in the life of a dance academy is indeed a milestone. More so in Chennai, where music and dance schools mushroom ever month!
Sridevi Nrithyalaya is the world nurtured by Sheela Unnikrishnan in Chennai. What started as a small academy in suburban Villiwakkam is now a lively and large academy with branches, and its base is in Vadapalani, west Chennai.
Sheela studied under Sundaram, a sishya of Mangudi Dorairaja Iyer.
Sheela celebrated the silver jubilee of her academy recently with dance recitals and dance dramas. Her latest, on Sri Krishna was staged to a packed audience.
This season Sheela's productions will be staged at various sabhas. Sheela says here work has been well appreciated because her sishyas have learnt and grown with her over many years allowing her to tap into a disciplined, talented pool of young dancers.
On a big stage, Sheela's dance productions are worth a sitting this season.
