The Balasaraswati/Scripps Award Ceremony is an annual affair conducted by the Balasaraswati Institute of Performing Arts to recognise artistic excellence in the field of Indian Classical Dance. The ceremony, this year, is scheduled on May 20, 2017 at the Music Academy, Chennai, at 6pm.
This year, Dr Sonal Mansingh, Bharatanatyam and Odissi exponent, will be honoured for her excellence in the field of classical dance by the institute. Following the award ceremony, Dr Sonal Mansingh will grace the occasion with a 45-minute solo performance.
The guest of honour for the evening will be music composer Gangai Amaran.
Incidentally, this occasion will mark the commencement of celebrations of the centenary year of the legendary T Balasaraswati with an array of events that will celebrate her art over the next year.
This occasion will also be used as a platform to launch two initiatives of the institute:
The launch of the Tamil translation of the biography of T Balasaraswati, Balasaraswati: Her Art and Life, originally written by Douglas M Knight Jr. The translation has been done by D Aravind, and the editor of the book is S Ramakrishna. One of the family gurus, Marularar P Madurai Muthu Swamigal, will receive the first copy of the book. The book will be translated into several other languages by the end of the next year.
The launch of a quarterly magazine, MAD (Mad About Dance), created, edited and published by the Balasaraswati Institute of Performing Arts. The intent of the mag is to bring to the fore interesting ideas, people and insights from across the globe that are relevant to the classical and contemporary arts scenario. It is an attempt to promote arts education, unearth young talent, recognise art of value and excellence, and an effort to inspire people to stay committed to the arts.
The magazine will be published in English as a digital version, and in Tamil as a hard copy. The magazine will be launched by Dr Sonal Mansingh.
