Singapore-based Apsaras Arts is having the Indian premiere of its dance production  "The Heroines of Raja Ravi Varma" in Chennai, India.

It is on Jan.12 evening at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chennai and is open to all.

Known for their beauty, artist Raja Ravi Varma’s  heroines that he painted were personifications of passion whose lives were filled with romance, love and tragedy.

This production tells their stories as they come to life from their easels through dance. The Indian premier of this production is being  presented by Kalapradarshini Trust, Chennai, India.

The heroines are Sita, Bhoomadevi, Damayanthi, Radha, Shakuntala and Yasodha - from Indian epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharatha, as depicted  by this celebrated painter.

Heading this production is artistic director Neila Sathyalingam, with concept, script, lyrics and music composition by Aravinth Kumarasamy. Senior dancer and choreographer Parvathi Ravi Gantasala from India also joins the creative team on this.

The heroines of Raja Ravi Varma premiered in January 2012 in collaboration with Esplanade, Singapore with three successful “sell-out” and "full-house" performances. During 2013, this production will be on a tour to a few international venues.
