30 years of Nrityalaya dance academy in Kerala. And 55 years of service to the arts by its founder, Kalamandalam Saraswathy.
These two milestones were celebrated on February 1 in Kozhikode, Kerala at a special event graced by special guests and dance recitals.
This dance academy was founded in 1972.
Saraswathy completed her training in Bharatanatyam and Mohiniattam from Kerala Kalamandalam in 1964 and then continued learning the art under Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam and later from illustrious gurus such as Chitra Visweswaran, Sudharani Raghupathy and Swamimalai S. K. Rajaratnam Pillai.
The name for the school was suggested by none other than her guru Dr Padma Subrahmanyam, when Saraswathy expressed her desire to start teaching Bharatanatyam in Kozhikode, Kerala.
Initially Nrityalaya functioned in rented premises and moved into its own space at Chalappuram, Kozhikode in the year 1990.
The new building, the first complete clay hollow-blocks structure in Kerala, was designed by senior architect R. K. Ramesh under the guidance of M. T. Vasudevan Nair, Saraswathy's husband and world famous litterateur.
Nrityalaya was inaugurated by late guru Vempati Chinna Satyam in 1990 and this started the journey.
Kalamandalam Saraswathy was honoured by the Govt. of Kerala with the highest state honour, the Nritta Natya Puraskaram in 2013 and later, her alma mater honoured her with the Kalamandalam Fellowship in 2017.
Nrityalaya has trained thousands of students and is known for its disciplined teaching methods. The aim of Nrityalaya is to impart the highest quality training in Bharatanatyam and Mohiniattam for a very nominal fee.
Saraswathy's daughter Aswathy and her husband N. Srikanth who are well -known Bharatanatyam performers, have been torch bearers of Nrityalaya since 2006.
The school is also the coordinating point of ABHAI-KERALA Shaakha and its activities. Workshops and chamber concerts regularly happen in Nrityalaya which are welcomed by the artistic community and general public of Kozhikode, says Srikanth.
The Nrityalaya Dance Ensemble also gives group performances in various festivals all over the country. The duo recently featured at the dance fest at Khajurao.
