Remembering dance guru K. J. Sarasa

K. J. Sarasa was a legendary Bharatanatyam guru and her disciples are many. Her school, Sarasalaya was located in the Mylapore neighbourhood of Chennai. Some of her sishyas have been celebrating their guru and her work annually.

This year, from February 16 onwards,  the 70th year of Sarasalaya will be marked with a three-day dance festival featuring some well-known dancers of the day. The festival takes place at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.

On Feb 16 evening, senior students of Sarasalaya - Sailaja, Urmila Sathyanarayanan, A. Lakshmanaswamy and Srekala Bharath - will perform.

A biopic on Sarasa will be screened.

The guests at the opening evening are Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy, Chitra Visweswaran and

Ramli Ibrahim.

That evening, dancer Priya Murle presents 'Panchaturam' followed by a Bharatanrityam recital by Mahati Kannan & Nrithyodaya artistes.

On Feb. 17 evening, there will be recitals by disciples of Priya Karthikeyan, by Kavitha Ramu  and by Shanmuga Sundaram and others. 

Later, there is a Odissi performance by Ramli Ibrahim and Geethika Sree and Mohiniyattam by Gopika Varma.

On Feb.18 evening, senior students of Sarasalaya - Lavanya Shankar, Lavanya Ananth, Varsha Suresh, Ramya Rajeshkumar and Divyatha Arun will perform.

Later, there is a Bharatanatyam recital by Chitra Visweswaran, a 'margam' recital by ABHAI Repertory's dancers.

Each evening, awards are to be presented to dancers, musicians and others.
