Dance fest themed on India's freedom fighters

Welcome to yet another themed dance festival from Chennai-based Natyarangam.

This time, the festival is themed 'Thyaga Bharatham' (Natyarangam is the dance wing of the Narada Gana Sabha Trust, Chennai) and is from August 15 to 19. The fest is at the Narada Gana Sabha auditorium, Chennai.

On the inaugural day, Natyarangam recognises excellence in the field of Bharatanatyam and honours artistes and scholars. The awardees this year are : veteran guru Radha Sridhar of Bengaluru, senior dancer Sathyanarayana Raju, young dancer Apoorva Jayaraman, flute accompanist J.B. Sruthi Sagar, and scholar, popular orator and resource person Dr. Sudha Seshayyan who gets the special award of excellence.

Natyarangam launched its first thematic Bharathanatyam Festival VANDE MATARAM in 1997 to celebrate the golden jubilee of India's Independence.

Now on the 70th anniversary of India's Independence, Natyarangam says it 'recalls and reveres the sacrifice of the freedom fighters' through the festival 'Thyaga Bharatham'. 

The leaders who will be remembered during the five day festival are Mahatma Gandhi, Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, Bhagat Singh, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose,  Chhatrapathi Shivaji and Veerapandia Kattabomman.

For the first time Natyarangam makes group presentations of four dancers in each programme.

Sarveshan Kumar, C P Satyajit, Sheejit Krishna and Keerthana Ravi, Vaibav Arekar and Manjari are among the dancers who will be performing at the fest.
