Chennai effort to support retiring artistes

Global Adjustments Pvt Ltd., a relocation and cross-cultural services company and The Interface – Social Investment Managers Alliance, both based in Chennai are launching, 'Smrutha Dhvani – Music Reborn’, a fund to support retiring artistes in Chennai.

This initiative aims to raise funds for retiring, accompanying artistes of the classical music and the dance fraternity in the city.

The two bodies feel that although the city is home to thousands of artistes and hosts the unique December Season, not much thought has gone into the future of some of India’s best performers, especially first generation artistes who are no longer performing, and have no definitive means of support during their years of retirement.

To honour and encourage the once-recognised musicians and performers, Global Adjustments and The Interface have come together for “Smrutha Dhvani” (Smrutha means “to remember”, while Dhvani means, “sound”). Through various cultural events in the city, Smrutha Dhvani hopes to raise enough funds to be able to build a tangible future for classical artistes.

“We have always ridden on the shoulders of Indian culture and through this endeavour, we hope to be able to give back to Indian culture and to the artistes fraternity,” says Ranjini Manian, CEO, Global Adjustments. Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy, dance guru says, “Smrutha Dhvani is a necessary effort to serve and share. Through this initiative accompanying artistes can use their recordings to propagate the art conduct classes, do workshops and in the process keep themselves alive through the art.

Accomplished singer Unnikrishnan is also lending a hand. He says, "Oduvars and Bhagavathars, who conduct the Bhagavatham and Namasankeerthana bhajans are the real artistes who need recognition

through this effort. Usha Sridhar of The Interface adds, “Smrutha Dhvani is an effort to repay the great artistes who have immensely contributed to the richness of Indian art and its culture. It will work towards making the stars of yesteryears twinkle once again.”
