Workshop on Mahavaidyanatha Sivan's 'melaraga malika'
Reported by Sumathi Krishnan

Devaganavali Trust founded by guru R. Vedavalli more than a decade ago, is committed to promotion and preservation of our classical tradition.

We have conducted workshops in the past and the most recent one was the 'melaraga malika' workshop which was conducted over two sessions, one in March and the other in June.

Participants are from Chennai and other cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkatta and Trichy.

Mahavaidyanatha Sivan, a great musician and composer of the 19th century composed the melaragamalika. This ragamalika is in praise of Pranatrtihara and is set to adi talam. It begins in the auspicious Sriragam and the pallavi has a chittasvaram followed by some jatis. After this there are seventy two verses ( for the seventy two melas), divided into cycles of six thus forming 12 chakras ( 6 sudha madhyama and six prati madhyama).

What is unique is that within two lines, Mahavaidyanatha Iyer brings in the raga bhavam as well has incorporated the raga mudra.

A valedictory function was held in Chennai where the students rendered some of the chakras on this occasion.

Photos featured here were taken on this occasion.
