Kamla Devi Chattopadhyay, one of India’s pioneering women, was singularly responsible for the establishment of some of India's leading cultural institutions.

She has left behind a rich legacy of Indian crafts, arts and theatre forms that have become an integral part of our rural economy, which are now synonymous with our vibrant grassroots cooperative movement.

Well known Mohiniyattam artiste says Kamla Devi recognised her potential as a Mohiniyattam artiste in the late 1970s and encouraged and supported her in the task of rejuvenating and propagating this ancient dance form from Kerala.

Bharathi says her journey begun then, culminated in the establishment of a Centre for Mohiniyattam, which was inaugurated by her in 1984.

In her memory, Centre for Mohiniyattam conducted a two-day festival of Mohiniyattam on the 9th and 10th March at the India Habitat World Centre, New Delhi.

The program featured solo and group performances in Mohiniyattam, followed by a documentary film on Mohiniyattam, produced by Bharati Shivaji, besides allied art forms of Kerala.
