'Naadhabrahmam' music magazine and the sabha it runs in Chennai recently got up a grand function to honour the Dhananjayans with a title and a gold medal at The Music Academy, Chennai.
The Academy president N.Murali presided and presented the award. In his address, Murali said that the Dhananjayans are a role model not only for the Bharatanaatyam world but as a couple, a role model for others to lead a good, happy life.
Dancer Vyjayanthimala Bali complimented the duo for their aesthetic and traditional approach and creative abilities.
R. Krishnaswamy, president of Chenai city sabhas said that V P Dhananjayan's free and frank opinions did not even spare his sabha with which the couple is associated for nearly 40 years. He said the couple's artistry and life are an inspiration to the younger generations.
Additional Solicitor General of India, Mohan Parasaran said that the country should recognize the dancers with a 'Padma' award.
The Dhananjayans seniormost disciple Radhika Shurajit presented a short film on her gurus titled "Kalaa-saadhana" produced by Utsav Music (copy of this DVD is available for home viewing)
The dance production 'Nrutya Tarangini' (choreographed by the Dhananjayans in 1986) based on the Kadanakutoohalam Tillana music of Dr. Balamuralikrishna - with lyrics composed specially on the couple - was the finale of this warm and unique. The senior disciples of the Dhananjayans performed in this production.
