Clarinet maestro A. K. C. Natarajan has been chosen by the executive committee of The Music Academy to preside over the 82nd annual conference to be held from December 15, 2008 to January 1, 2009.
He will be honoured with the ‘Sangitha Kalanidhi’ title at the sadas on January 1, 2009. said president of The Music Academy N. Murali in a press release.
The 78 year old Natarajan, son of clarinet vidwan, Chinna Krishna Naidu, learnt nagaswaram, but pursued a career as a clarinet artiste. His nagaswaram teacher was Ilupur Natesha Pillai, brother of the great thavil maestro Illupur Panchami. He received his lessons in vocal music from Alathur Venkatesha Iyer, father of Alathur Sivasubramania Iyer.
"In opting for clarinet, I made a conscious decision. I was overawed not just by the music of legends like Thiruvduthurai Rajarathinam Pillai,Thiruvenkadu Subramania Pillai and hiruvidaimaruthur Veeruswamy Pillai, but also by their personalities. Competing with them and occupying a space for myself was not that easy," he once said.
