Natyarangam (the dance wing of the Narada Gana Sabha, Chennai) is organising classical dance competitions in three categories for Bharatanatyam dancers in June in Chennai.
These will be held at the Narada Gana Sabha mini hall.
Applications are available at the Sabha's office and the last date for submitting them is June 9.
The first 20 applicants in each category will be chosen to participate in the competitions.
On June 14, dancers in the age group 8 to 12 years will have to perform a Jatiswaram. On June 15, dancers in the age group of 13 to 18 years will have to perform excerpts from a Varnam.
On June 22, dancers in the age group 19 to 30 years can participate in the Abhinaya competition in which they will have to pick a line for abhinaya and perform it after a brief preparation time.
Competitors in the first two categories will perform to taped music. Live music will be arranged by Natyarangam for the Abhinaya competition, says S. Janaki of Natyarangam.
The first prize winner of the Abhinaya competition will be given an opportunity to perform at one of the monthly programmes of Natyarangam.
