Tribute to 'kanjira' Harishankar

Harishankarji to many of the performing artistes and friends, kanjira vidwan Harishankar gave this single sided percussion instrument a prestigious place on the concert platform, said vocalist T. N. Seshagopalan.

The disciples of Harisankar organised an evening dedicated to their guru, to remember him on his sixth anniversary. The disciples took a lot of efforts to source the video clippings of Harishankar performing at the concerts of the doyens like M. L. Vasanthakumari, M. Balamuralikrishna, Kaaraikudi R. Mani and at the millenium concert in the USA with flutist T. Viswanathan and mridangam artiste T. Sankaran.

Senior kanjira artiste Mayavaram Somasundaram was awarded the Kalaimamani Sri G. Harishankar Memorial award instituted this year by the voluntary association of Harisankar's disciples and admireres.

"Were there five fingers or fifty in Harishankar's hand?" wondered vocalist Seshagopalan. He remembered the days when he took him to his guru Ramanathapuram C. S. Sankarasivam and C. S. Murugabhoopathy for advanced learning. "Sankeernam played at the hands of Harishankar," Seshagopalan added.

Senior mridangam artiste Madurai T. Srinivasan could still not forget the days of working with Harishankar in the Vadya Vrinda sessions at the All India Radio.

A booklet of collection of tributes to this artiste by various musicians and percussionists was released at this function.

A short percussion ensemble titled 'Trimukha', a mini tani avarthanam of three kanjiras by N. Amrit, Nerkunam S. Sankar and B. Srisundarkumar was a befitting tribute by the disciples.

The convenor of the event Nerkunam S. Sankar can be contacted at phone no. (0) 98411 35405
