Dancer Padma Subrahmanyam has a huge project to execute.

The idea of having a centre for Asian culture in the outskirts of Chennai, conceived by dancer Padma Subrahmanyam is now all set to take off.

The Bharatamuni Foundation for Asian Culture (BFAC) as she calls, will come up in the vast five 5 acre-land at Pattipulam village, 8 kms ahead of the heritage coastal site Mamallapuram or Mahabalipuram as it used be called.

Padma had arranged for a grand Bhumi Puja for laying the foundation stones for this centre by inviting personalities from various fileds of arts and media.
In the city of Chennai and the nearby coastal areas, there was a sudden alert of Tsunami following an earthquake in Sumatra, on Wednesday evening.
The shamianas at this site, which is close to the beach were dismantled and there was a dull moment.
But the alert was lifted on the same night and the arrangements were again on. Eminent artistes of music, dance, theatre, cinema and people from other fields like media laid foundation stones for the centre.

Earlier Padma performed a series of dances to raise funds for the project. Read.

At the site, a temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha has already been built.
Padma had announced that the main auditorium at this centre will be named after Abhinava Gupta, a Kashmiri dance commentator and the conference hall will be named after Ilango Adigal, the author of the Tamil epic Silappadikaram.

However, the reaction of M. Karunanidhi, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, on this project is different.

At a private function, he said that it was the Tamil saint Ilango Adigal who had originally expounded the nuances of the art of dance and read out a few passages from the epic 'Silappadikaram' which described the rules of Bharatanatyam. He indicated that the idea of constructing a temple for Bharatamuni is an attempt to attack the Dravidian race.

The project is an ambitious one and requires much more money.
