Thaalavadyotsav at Bangalore

Bangalore based Percussive Arts Centre (PAC)organised its 26th annual Taalavadyotsav from July 26 to 29, 2007 at Seva Sadana, Malleswaram, Bangalore.
Eminent scholars, musicians, musicologists and others participated in this International Percussive Arts festival and music conference.

Dr. Mahesh Joshi, Senior Director, Doordarshan Kendra, Bangalore inaugurated the fest on July 26.
Chiranjiv Singh, former Ambassador of India to UNESCO, was the Chief Guest at the function and released the Souvenir Publication.
Theteam remembered the efforts of Late Bangalore K.Venkataram, founder of PAC. Senior vocalist Dr. R. K. Srikantan presided over the ceremony while the Executive Director of the Arts Centre, V. Krishna welcomed everybody and presented a report on the highlights of the festival and activities of the Arts Centre. The inauguration was followed by a violin duet concert by Mysore M. Nagaraj and Dr. Mysore M. Manjunath with A. V. Anand on the mridangam and Giridhar Udupa on the ghatam.

On July 27, the proceedings started at 6.00 pm with ‘Sthree Thaal Tarang’ directed by Sukanya Ramagopal (ghata tarang, ghatam and konnakol) with Ranjani Venkatesh (mridangam) and Bhagyalakshmi Krishna (morching).

The second program of the day was a vocal recital at 7.00 pm by Prof. Mysore Nagamani Srinath with Nalina Mohan on the violin, B. Dhruvaraj on the mridangam, M. A. Krishnamurthy on the ghatam and Bharadwaj Sathavalli on the morching.

On July 28 the program started at 6.00 pm with a laya vinyasa by K. U. Jayachandra Rao on the mridanga) and G. Omkar on the ghatam.

This was followed by a vocal duet concert at 6.30 pm by Hyderabad Brothers - Seshachari and Raghavachari with Charulatha Ramanujam on the violin, Arjun Kumar on the mridangam and B. N. Chandramouli on the khanjira.

The final day of the festival 29th saw the awards presentation at the valedictory function. Justice Dr. M. Rama Jois, Former Chief Justice of Haryana and Punjab and former Governor of Jharkhand and Bihar was the Chief Guest and Pt. Rajasekhar Mansur, president, Karnataka Sangeetha Nruthya Academy, delivered the valedictory address.

The festival came to a thundering climax with a performance by Laya Vrushti (Percussion Ensemble Of Percussive Arts Centre) – directed by Anoor Ananthakrishna Sharma with V. Krishna on the mridangam, G. Guruprasanna on the (khanjira), B. S. Arun Kumar on the drums, Anoor Ananthakrishna Sharma on dolu / thavil, Udayraj Karpur on the tabla, B. C. Manjunath on the konagolu.

The awards for the year are as follows:

Palghat Mani Iyer Memorial Award was presented to Mridanga vidwan Mavelikara K. Velukutty Nair.
Palani Subramanya Pillai Memorial Award went to Khanjira Vidwan Sosale Seshagiri Das.

Bangalore K. Venkataram Memorial Award was presented to art critic S. N. Chandrasekar.

Two young artistes received the youth awards.

H. Puttachar Memorial Award was awarded to B. Dhruvaraj for Mridangam and CMANA Prize (Carnatic Music Association Of North America) went to U. N. Giridhar Udupa for ghatam.
