Journey to Sacred places through dance
 
Natyarangam, the dance wing of Chennai based arts organisation, Narada Gana Sabha is celebrating its eleventh annual dance festival from August 7 to 12. The programmes will be held at Narada Gana Sabha auditorium, Alwarpet, Chennai.

The thematic dance presentations of Natyarangam are popular among the rasikas. The extensive research and translating the theme and the ideas into classical dance was started by this group in 1997, when India celebrated the Golden jubilee of independence.

'Vande Mataram' presented on the occasion has led to many other thematic productions.
Gita Bharatham, Rasa Bharathan, Kavya Bharatham and Dasa Bharatham to name a few.

A few holy places will be presented through Bharatanatyam this year.
'Kshetra Bharatham' , dance on sacred places will be the theme of this year for the annual festival of Natyarangam.

On the eleventh anniversary celebrations of Natyarangam, eleven dancers and eleven resource persons will talk and present the dance show on eleven 'kshetrams'.

On the inaugural day, Aug. 7, dansue, director of Kalakshetra Foundation Leela Samson will present 'Varanasi'. The resource person is dancer - guru Prof. C. V. Chandrasekhar. The music for this programme is by the Carnatic singer Bombay Jayashri.

On Aug. 8, at 6 pm, dancer Praveen Kumar will dance on the Pandharpur kshetram, on the guidance of Swami Namananda Giri.
At 7.30pm, Narthaki Nataraj will present the holy town Madurai and the resource person Revathy Sankkaran will talk on the theme and town.

The Chennai kshetram will be presented by dancer Gayathri Balagurunathan for which Sudha Seshayyan, Tamil scholar, is the resource person.
This programme will be on Aug.9 at 6 pm followed by dancer Sreelatha Vinod's presentation of Puri kshetram at 7.30 pm. S. Sundararajan has done the research on this theme.

Two important holy places Tirupati and Srirangam will be presented by dancers A. Lakshman and Priyadarshini Govind on Aug. 10.
Pappu Venugopala Rao, who has done elaborate writings on Annamayya, the saint poet who composed many songs on the Lord at Tirupati is the resource person for A. Lakshman's dance on the day.
And Tamil writer Prema Nandakumar is the resource person for the presentation of Srirangam.

Tiruchendur and Kanchipuram will be the holy places for Aug. 11 and dancer Roja Kannan will present Tiruchendur, with guidance from Kausalya Sivakumar, a popular religious speaker in Tamil at 6 pm.
Chithra Madhavan, a doctorate in ancient History and Archaeology is the resource person for the dance by Vidhya Subramanian on Kanchipuram. This programme is at 7.30 pm.

On the concluding day, Aug. 12,, Mathura and Chidambaram, the two holy places, where the two divine dancers Krishna and Shiva, said to have danced, will be presented by the dancers Rama Vaidyanathan and N. Srikanth.
While advocate and arts promoter R. Krishnaswamt of Narada Gana Sabha is the resource person for the Mathura kshetram, the Tamil scholar and speaker Sarada Nambi Arooran has guided dancer Srikanth for the Chidambaram theme.

On the inaugural day, dance guru Indira Rajan will be honoured. This year's Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy Award will be received by violinist N. Sigamani. The Obul Reddy Award will go to Narthaki Nataraj and the Vasanthalakshmi Narasimhachari award will be for Mythili Prakash.
