2005 at a glance...

 
Here's a short take at some of the major happenings in the kutcheri world in 2005...

- Violin maestro Kunnakudi Vaidhyanathan celebrated 60 years as an artiste, in February.

- Veteran Bharatanatyam guru U.S. Krishna Rao passed away in March.

- Worldspace, the unique radio channel which beams more than 30 channels via satellite, launched 'Sruti' a 24-hour   Carnatic music channel at an event in Chennai in March.

- 'Pravahi' a film on dancer Alarmel Valli, directed by Arun Khopkar premiered in Chennai in March.

- Hyderabad based dance guru T.K. Narayan passed away in March.

- Early this year, leading Bharatanatyam artiste Leela Samson took over as Director of Kalakshetra, the famed institution   for fine arts, founded by Rukmini Devi.

- T.T. Vasu, who was the President of The Music Academy passed away in May.

- Senior Congress leader Ram Niwas Mirdha took over as Chairman of Sangeet Natak Akademi, the apex body for arts in   India, in June. After a two-month tussle, SNA bid goodbye to senior Odissi artiste Sonal Mansingh as Chairman.

- Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha, that hosts kutcheris at Vanimahal in T. Nagar, celebrated its diamond jubilee in July. At   an event in Chennai several senior musicians were honoured.

- Maestro M. Balamuralikrishna celebrated his 75th birthday in July. At an event in Chennai, Sangeetha released special   albums featuring the maestro.

- President of India, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam inaugurated the centenary celebrations at the Bangalore Gayana Samaja in   August. Events are being hosted at various cities in India.

- YACM, the Youth association for Classical Music, celebrated its 20th anniversary in August.

- Senior mridangist Melakkaveri K. Krishnamurthy died in September.

- 'Beyond Destiny - The Life and Times of Subbudu', the biography of veteran art critic P.V. Subramaniam (popularly   called Subbudu) was released. Authored by Delhi based writer Lada Guruden Singh, the book has been published by   Bhavan's Book University.

- Veteran vocalist and composer Vidwan Madurai N. Krishnan passed away in October.

- Mridangist Karaikudi Mani celebrated his 60th birthday in September. He surprised rasikas at various sabhas in   Chennai, by distributing sweets.

- The Music Academy elected a new team for its Executive Committe in November. N. Murali of The Hindu newspaper took   over as the new President.

- A national veena festival, with paper presentations and concerts, was hosted by The Veena Foundation in association   with Narada Gana Sabha and Mudhra in Chennai in November.
