Bharatanatyam in Kenya
By Dr. A. Ramayya Mulukutla

In Nairobi Kenya, where there is a very large South Indian Community of Tamils, Telugus, Kannadigas and Malayalees, the Indian culture is being well preserved. A beautiful Balaji temple has been built in the heart of the city in 2003, with the help of local contributions, architects and builders.

Every yearthe temple celebrates Brahmotsavam to coincide with the same festival in Tirupati at this part of the year. Priests from Chennai and Hyderabad perform the rituals and this year was no different. Every evening there were cultural programmes too by local artistes.

One of the events featured a Bharatanatyam recital by Shalini Srivatsan and Shruti in the temple premises, in front of about 500 rasikas.

Guru Githa Umesh, who established her school in 1977 has trained Shalini and Shruti. The sisters performed for about one hour and included a Varnam.
