President Kalam inaugurates Gayana Samaja's centenary

The President of India Dr. A.P .J. Abdul Kalam, will inaugurate the centenary celebrations of The Bangalore Gayana Samaja on 20 August, at 5.05 pm at the Samaja auditorium, Sri Krishnarajendra Road, Bangalore.

Governor of Maharashtra, S. M. Krishna, Governor of Karnataka, T.N. Chaturvedi and the Chief Minister of Karnataka, N. Dharam Singh will be the chief guests. The 'Gayana Samaja Centenary Award' will be presented to senior musicians R.K. Srikantan (Carnatic vocal), Vellore Ramabhadran (mridangam) and Gangubai Hangal (Hindustani vocal) for life time achievement and longest association with Gayana Samaja.

The inaugural concert features violin maestro L. Subramaniam. (Admission to the Inaugural function will be only by invitation.)

A 10-day 'Gayana Samaja Centenary Festival of Music and Dance' will be held from August 21 to 30, 2005. The fest features musicians Gundecha Brothers, Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan and Vijyalakshmi, Sanjay Subramaniam, Chitraveena Ravikiran, Vidyabhushana, R.K. Padmanabha, T.V. Shankaranarayanan, Sudha Raghunathan and Nagamani Srinath. Senior dancer Vyjayanthimala Bali will present a Bharatanatyam recital featuring compositions of Karnataka composers. So far as part of the yearlong centenary celebrations, over 130 programmes were organised by Gayana Samaja in Bangalore and in Thiruvananthapuram, Shimoga, Udupi, Mysore and Sringeri.

The Samaja has plans to celebrate the centenary in Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad and Thanjavur. Publication of the history of Samaja, lectures at the music conferences, compendium of compositions for rasikas, Veena Seshanna's compositions and a souvenir are on the anvil in addition to documentation and archival preservation of talks of past masters, portrait gallery at teh auditorium, release of postal stamp and special cover etc., during this year.
