Felicitating Balamuralikrishna

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa participated at an event held in Chennai to felicitate senior musician M. Balamuralikrishna on the occasion of his 75th birthday.

The programme, open to an invited audience, was held on July 25, 2005 at The Music Academy's main hall, Alwarpet, Chennai.

The popular vocalist was also honoured on his being conferred with the French honour of Chevalier des Arts et Letters.

The Chief Minister is reported to have said that Balamuralikrishna deserves no less than the 'Bharat Ratna' award. She is reported to have said, "A day will come when we influence even the Centre and God willing when such a day comes, I will see to it that he is awarded Bharat Rathna."

And the maestro composed and dedicated a new ragam to the Chief Minister with the pallavi "Jaya jaya lalithe..."! The event was organised by Chennai based dancer Saraswathi's Vipanchee School of Dance and Music.

The programme featured vocal concerts by prince Rama Varma of Travancore, Kalluri Muralimohan, group singing by 75 children, a dance recital by Priya Jayaraman, a talavadya ensemble conducted by Vikku Vinayakaram and a vocal concert by Balamuralikrishna himself.
