Celebrating Thyagaraja in the hills 
Carnatic music lovers in Coonoor were treated to an evening of music when the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Nilgiris Kendra, organised the Thyagaraja Aradhana at the Sri Vinayagar Koil on 27 February 2005.

It was the first time that such an event was being held in the Nilgiris. The evening began with the welcome address by Usha Sriram, who spoke about the Bhavan's activities in the district. She also spoke at length about MS, to whose memory the evening was dedicated.

This was followed by the rendering of the Thyagaraja Pancharatna Kirtanams by Lalitha Nagarajan and Mohana Krishnan and party from Coimbatore.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Nilgiris Kendra has been conducting Carnatic Vocal music classes for the past 6 months and the occasion gave the young students of musician Neelakantan, a chance to give their first public performance.

The evening concluded with a vocal recital of Thyagaraja kirtanams by P.G. Manoj from Coimbatore, who was accompanied by Nellai M. Neelakandan on the mridangam and S.N. Sharama on the violin.

Prof. AVK Iyengar honoured the performing artistes with shawls, on the occasion. The Nilgiris Kendra of the Bhavan has decided to have this as an annual event.
