Kalasagaram's youth festival / Secunderabad By Dr. A. Ramayya Mulukutla | |
Kalasagaram recently showcased the talents of three young vocalists, from three different cities, at Keyes High School for Girls in
Secunderabad.
Priyadarshini Varadarajan of Mumbai, (disciple of Tiruvarur N. S. Chandrasekharan), supported by R. Dinakar (violin) and V. Kaliprasad Babu (mridangam) gave a 3-hour Sampradaya Kutcheri from Varnam to Mangalam including RTP in Thodi. The second day, it was the turn of S. Padmavati of Hyderabad (disciple of T. V. Ramanujacharyulu and Suguna Varadachari), with the support of Komanduri Krishna (violin) and S. Arvind (mridangam). Notable renditions were Mysore Vasudevachar's Ninne Nammithinayya (Simhendra Madhyamam) and Thyagaraja'a Karuna Choodavamma (Thodi). On the third day, the youngest of them all S. M. Vilasini of Chennai (disciple of Raji Gopalakrishnan) who won 'Tambura' prizes at Kalasagaram's competitions this year, performed with the assistance of R. Satish Kumar (violin) and Delhi S. Sairam (mridangam). She performed several kritis including Khamas, Kalyani and Thodi.
On this occasion, Kalasagaram's annual souvenir, dedicated to the memory of 'MS', was released by T.V.Balan (ex Director of ACC). This souvenir, produced with the help of VST Industries, contained some rare photographs of MS, and was enjoyable to see and read. Critic B.R.C. Iyengar, observed that the Twin Cities of Hyderabad-Secunderabad have two Music Colleges and a University conferring post-graduate degrees and yet have not produced one notable musician. He suggested that senior musicians as Gurus, should mentor younger artistes and guide them in the intricacies of Raagalaapana, Swarakalpana, choice of Raagas for a given concert etc., as well as in the art of presenting a concert. |
