Karnataka Ganakala Parishat (Youth Wing) and Sri Jayarama Seva Mandali jointly celebrated 'Yuva Gana Mela' a youth festival of Carnatic Music and Dance. This festival took place from 21 to 23 January 2005 at Sri Jayarama Seva Mandali, Bangalore. The festival took off on 21st morning with an invocation by Manoj a talented young singer from Bangalore. Dr. S.C. Sharma inaugurated the festival. Parishat President Vidwan R.K.Padmanabha, Parishat Secretary Mysore V.Subramanya were also present.
The first programme was a lecture demonstration by Dr. S.C. Sharma on 'Youngsters and Classical Music'. He explained the various scientific aspects of Carnatic Music and spoke about how youngsters are interested in music these days. He used multimedia presentations to explain the mathematical and scientific theories relating to Carnatic music. He used various krithis of Dikshitar, Thyagaraja and Syama Sastry to relate the theories. A worthy demonstration to engineers who could really relate music and engineering.
This was followed by another lecture demonstration by Vidwan V. Krishna and Vidhushi Kalavathy Avadhoot (son and daughter of ghatam artiste Vidwan Late Bangalore K. Venkatraman) on 'Laya Lalitya, Ranjakatva and Sankeernate'. The duo explained how the Laya can be maintained while singing. The demonstration was in a concert pattern, started with a varnam and then presented 2 to 3 krithis. The brother - sister duo presented as to how the complex mathematical calculations are to be sung in an aesthetic manner so that the listeners should not feel it complicated. The items they presented were complex but very aesthetic and soothing to hear. It was a model example for every performing youngster as to how complexity can be made simple.
Next was a junior concert by Meghana Murthy who hails from a small village called Ujire in the costal Karnataka. She belongs to a music school run by Vidwan Vittal Ramamurthy, which is in Ujire. She sang Madhyamavathi - Palinchu Kamakshi. M.N. Satyanarayana on the violin and B.S. Anand on the mridangam gave her an apt support.
The evening programme for the day took off with a flute Jugalbandi by Ashwini B.S (student of Dr. N. Ramani) and Chaitanya (Hindustani). The Hamsadhwani and Hindola they played were much appreciated and the concert was a rarity, with a male - female combination on flute Jugalbandi. They were accompanied by B.K.Raghu on the violin, Guruprassana on the mridangam and Abhijeet on the tabla.
The second concert of the evening was by Pattabhirama Pandit (student of Vidwan Late K.V. Narayanaswamy). Chaarulatha Ramanujam on the violin, N.S. Mahesh on the mridangam and Shreeram on the ghatam accompanied him.
The second day's programme started with a lecture-demonstration by Vidwan Anoor Ananthakrishna Sharma who is popularly and affectionately called as Shivu by the music fraternity on 'Techniques of Playing Different Percussion Instruments'. He is a master in playing as many as 30 different types of percussive instruments, which he demonstrated that day. He played the varnam in an instrument called Damaru, which was an interesting presentation.
Next was a concert by Vinay Sharva, with Deepa. K. Murthy on the violin and Amruth Nagsunder on the mridangam. This was followed by a lec-dem by Dr. T.S. Satyavathi on 'Changing Trends in Pallavi Rendition'. The subject given to her was very apt, as she is known for her presentation on different types of pallavis. She demonstrated Avadhana Pallavi with different 'nadais' in two hands.
The evening programme started with a flute recital by Rajkamal. He was accompanied by Mysore Rajesh on the violin, Ranjini Venkatesh on the mridangam and Bharadwaj Sathavalli on the morsing.
The second concert of the evening was by Ranjini Hebbar who hails from Udupi and is presently settled in Chennai and being guided by Chengalpet Ramnathan. Ranjini presented heavy compositions like Venna Pustaka (Vedavahini) and Sarassamadhana (Kapi Narayini). Ganesh Kumar on the violin, Radesh on the mridangam and Bhgayalakshmi on the morsing supported her. The final day's programme featured a quiz on Carnatic music. There were around 50 participants in the first round. The team Amruthavahini - Roopa, Vinay and Yagnaraman won the first prize. The second prize was won by team Poorvikalyani - Krishna
Prasad, Sharath, Arjun. Karthik Hebbar, Convener of Youth Wing anchored the quiz.
Parishat President R.K.Padmanabha appreciated the work of the Youth Wing Committee members in organizing the event. Parishat Secretary Mysore V Subramanya said that such events need to happen regularly to give youngsters a platform to perform. Certificates were issued to all the participants.
The evening programme commenced with a vocal concert by Maruti Prasad, a blind vocalist who is making a name in Bangalore. Achyuta on the violin, Harsha Samaga on the mridangam and Omkar on the ghatam accompanied him.
The final program of the event was a Bharatanatyam recital by Keerthi Raamgopal.
The Youth Wing committee - Karthik Hebbar (Convener), Archana Bhatt, B.S.Anand, Manasi Prasad, Sahana Ramachandra and R.K. Phalgun enjoyed organising this event.
And in April, the youth wing will organise a lec-dem on Asthotara Talas.
