Thyagaraja Aradhana 2005

The 158th Thyagaraja Aradhana opened on January 27, 2005 at Thiruvaiyaru, the birthplace of saint Thyagaraja in south India. The small town is located on the banks of river Cauvery near Thanjavur. The six-day music fest, which is a homage to saint Thyagraja, was inaugurated by the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Surjit Singh Barnala. It will be held till February 1, 2005.

The Bahula Panchami falls on January 30, when the aradhanai and the group singing of Pancharathna kritis will be held. The day-long fest commences at 8.30 am daily and features 10-minute concerts by several well known musicians and young up-coming artistes. The musicians offer their music as a homage to the saint composer Thyagaraja. More than 500 artistes participate in the fest. B. Rajam Iyer, Charumathi Ramachandran, Mysore Nagamani Srinath, K.J. Yesudas, Sudha Raghunathan, Flute N. Ramani, Sirkazhi Siva Chidambaram, Hyderabad Sisters, T. N. Seshagopalan, Geetha Raja, Unnikrishnan, Kadri Gopalnath, A. Kanyakumari, Sashikiran and Ganesh, Anuradha Suresh Krishnamurthy, Raji Gopalakrishnan, T.M. Krishna, O.S. Arun, T.N. Krishnan among several others participate.

The fest is being co-ordinated by Sri Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha. An announcement in the sabha's festival booklet says that all up-coming artistes participating in the Aradhana festival this year, will be given the next chance in the year 2007 only. Artistes who wish to participate in the Aradhana festival next year (2006) should make their own arrangements for accompaniments and apply before October 30, 2005. The applications should be sent to The Secretaries, Sri Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha, No. 31, Thirumanjana Veedhi, Thiruvaiyaru - 613 204.

The sabha is headed by G. Rangaswami Moopanar, President, Thyaga Brahma Mahotsava Sabha, Moopanar Bungalow, Sundaraperumal Koil Post, Kumbakonam Taluk. Violinist Kunnakudi Vaidhyanathan and thavil artiste Haridwaramangalam A.K. Palanivel are the sabha's secretaries.
