Annamacharya Keerthanas camp / Hyderabad
By Dr. A. Ramayya Mulukutla / Hyderabad

How does a blind person learn Keerthanas? Kondaveeti Jyothirmayee of Annamayya Kala Peetham has transliterated some of Annamacharya's Keerthanas into English and then converted them into Braille.

Jyothirmayee conducted a 'Sibiram' (Camp) from May 24 to 31, 2004 at Dilsukhnagar, to train enthusiasts from ages 5 to 65 to sing Annamacharya Keerthanas. This was conducted free of charge.

Earlier (from April 25 to May 12), Jyothiramayee conducted a similar camp at Srinagar Colony. These free training Sibirams have been an annual summer feature in Hyderabad for the past couple of years. Last year, Jyotirmayee conducted free classes to female inmates at the local Chanchalguda Jail. She teaches the hearing impaired and personally goes to locations of physically challenged persons to train them.

She also runs a school at her Annamayya Peetham.
Over the last few years she conducted several free camps in Kuwait, Singapore and the U. S. A. to promote and propogate the Sankeerthana tradition of Annamacharya, through the help of persons of Indian origin.

Jyothirmayee was trained in classical Carnatic Music by gurus Indira Devi, Pudukkotai Krishna Murthy and Nookala Chinna Satyanarayana. She obtained her M. A. degree in Music from Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati. She joined the Annamayya Project of Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam and did two years of research work on Annamayya and his compositions.
