Youth Festival / Secunderabad
By Dr. Ramayya Mulukutla / Secunderabad

Kalasagaram, of Secunderabad organized a dance festival on 12, 13 and 14 of March, 2004 to celebrate the International Women's Day as well as introducing new talented artistes in the field of Bharatanatyam.

ASMITA, a women's organization in cooperation with OXFAM the well known U.S. based NGO, presented a ballet in Kuchipudi style, Lakshmana Rekha, depicting the discrimination, and indignities suffered by women. The ballet started with praising the work done by pioneers, like Savitribai Phule, Durgabai Deshmukh and Chityala Ailamma who stood up for women's rights, education and fought against domestic violence.

Then it went into a novel interpretation of the passive resistance offered by heroines of the epics. It touched upon the lives of Gandhari (mother of Kauravas in Mahabharatha) who blind-folded herself, Urmila (wife of Lakshmana in Ramayana) who slept for fourteen years and Renuka (wife of Rishi Jamadagni and mother of Parasurama) who was beheaded on the false premise of her losing her chastity.

Vanaja Uday, Jyothi Reddy, Ramani Siddi, Shailaja Kiram, Lakshmirajyam and Vijayalakshmi presented this well choreographed ballet written by lyricist Volga.

On the second day, Manasa Gummi, a 14 year-old disciple of Gurus V.S. Ramamurthy and Manjula Ramaswami, presented a solo performance of Bharatanatyam.

On the third day, students of Uttaraa Center for Performing Arts, and disciples of Guru Geetha Ganesan presented 'Sita Kalyanam'. This was followed by another solo performance by P. B. Pallavi.

These programs were well attended and received praise from the audience.
