Celebrating Rukmini Devi / Malaysia
Kshetra Academy, run by Kalakshetra alumnus Apsara Ram Gopal, commemorated the birth centenary of Rukmini Devi Arundale, at a function in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was held on Rukmini Devi's birthday, February 29, 2004, at the Indian High Commission Auditorium.

Prof. N. S. Jayalakshmi, retired senior dance teacher at Kalakshetra, who was on a visit to Kuala Lumpur, was the Guest of Honor at this event. The function began with a welcome address by Apsara, followed by recitation of the Kalakshetra prayer led by Prof. Jayalakshmi. In her speech, Prof. Jayalakshmi recalled her long and illustrious association with Kalakshetra since its inception and with Rukmini Devi. Her speech was interspersed with numerous instances that not only illustrated Rukmini Devi's uncompromising attitude to artistic integrity and aesthetic sense but also exemplified her warm personality.

A slide documentary on Rukmini Devi's life and achievements produced by Kshetra Academy was then screened. Some students from Kshetra Academy then read out brief essays about dance. The function culminated with the Nattabhairavi Thillana performed by Apsara Ram Gopal. This Thillana was composed by Veena Krishnamachari in praise of Rukmini Devi and Kalakshetra. The function concluded with the recitation of Shanti Mantra and Arati.
