The Natya Sangraham camp was a dance conglomeration. It was a coming together of young dancers, well known dance Gurus, scholars in music, literature and dance. In short, the three-day camp held from 24 to 26 January at Thennangur (about 110 km from Chennai) was a learning experience for anyone interested in dance.
This is the fifth year in succession that Natyarangam, the dance wing of the Narada Gana Sabha in Chennai has organised this camp to kindle interest among young Bharatanatyam dancers in the holistic approach to the dance-form.
Prof. C.V. Chandrasekhar has been the Convenor of the camp ever since it was launched. The proceedings were conducted under the four broad aspects of abhinaya -- angika, vachika, aharya and satvika which were handled by eminent resource persons like E.R. Gopalakrishnan (yoga), C.V. Chandrasekhar & Jaya (dance workouts), Krishangini (poetry appreciation), N. Ravikiran (music), Karaikkudi Mani and Rajeswari Sainath (laya aspects), Pushkala Gopal (aharya), and Kalanidhi Narayanan (satvika abhinaya).
There were 26 enthusiastic participants, some of whom could not resist the 'healthy temptation' to attend the camp more than once. It was a packed schedule with listening to the resource persons, interactive sessions, dance performances, singing and dancing at the temple before Lord Panduranga and Rukmayi. It was dance all the way - talking dance, watching dance, understanding dance and doing dance! A unique experience...
The camp was organised and conducted under the supervision of R. Krishnaswami, Secretary of Narada Gana Sabha, and the seven committee members of Natyarangam. And a special word of appreciation for the sumptuous spread offered every day by Gnanambika Jayaraman and his group.
