Muranpatta Mugangal in solo Bharatanatyam, in Singapore
By a Rasika from Singapore

'Muranpatta Mugangal' [Diverse Faces] a solo Bharathanatyam performance was presented recently in Singapore. The joy and pain in womanhood was portrayed by dancer Neeraja Nagarajan [a Kalakshetra graduate] now working at Bhasker's Arts Academy in Singapore.

Neeraja chose to present the theme 'Diverse Faces' with modern, contemporary Tamil poems written by female poets from Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. Five such poems were set to different ragas such as Hamsadwani, Ramavathi, Nalinakanthi, Subhapuntuvarali, Vasanthi, Keervani with different music expertise of both Chennai and Singapore.

These poems were presented as Padavarnam and padams. A good combination of Eiyal, Esai, Nadagam was presented to the audience.

In the first part of the performance Neeraja presented a woman who enjoys looking at innocent children playing in an evening after rain. The poem was narrated in the dramatic from, set to different counts like Thrishram, Mishram with Bharata Natyam gestures.

In the poem 'Trees' the conversation between a young woman and trees, was protrayed. The poem by Shankari [Sri Lankan] was presented as a Varnam. 'Gun shots heard along with the music of the word.' portray the violence in the world, for which the poet decides to face the world. This thought falls in place in the second half of the varnam.

Part Two looked at the jealousies of yesteryear devadasis and their craving for for wealth, with a comparative look at the poverty among prostitutes today. Neeraja handled the padam 'Aduvum Suluval' to show jealousy, and then danced to a piece that spoke of unhygienic abortions as practised today amoung Prostitutes. This theme did shock some people. Dancing to such themes demands a dancer's confidence. The dancer chose to the life of a widow who decides to face the word with her forward march in her choicen path like wind and light. And the choreography did justice to the poem written by poet Krishangini; dancer's mother.Neeraja performed it very expressively.

All the musicians vocal by Ampili Pradeep, nattuvangam by Bakthan, mridangam by Santhos Menon, violin by Jay Prakash and veena by Arun were a great support for the presentation.
