The Government of Madhya Pradesh will confer the National Kalidas Award (Samman) for 2003, on Madras based dancer Chandralekha for classical dance, renowned violin exponent V.G. Jog for classical music, craftsman Himmat Shah for plastic arts and theatrist Gurusharan Singh for theatre. It is said that a high level jury has taken this decision unanimously.
Three of the artistes would be decorated with the Samman at a function to be organised on November 1, 2003 at Bhopal. The Kalidas Award for theatre would be presented at the annual Kalidas Samaroh on November 4 at Ujjain. Each Samman carries a cash amount of Rs. one lakh and a plaque.
The Madhya Pradesh government instituted the Kalidas Samman in 1980. The first Samman was presented to renowned classical vocalist, Semangudi Srinivasa Aiyar and Pandit Mallikarjun Mansoor. The Kalidas Samman for classical dances was instituted in 1983 and its first recipient was Bharatanatyam exponent Rukmini Devi Arundale. The Kalidas Samman for plastic arts is being given since 1981 and the Samman for theatre since 1982. The First Kalidas Samman for theatre was given to noted theatrist, Shambhu Mitra. |
