Sangeet Natak Akademi awards announced

The President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, presents the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi awards at a special function on 6 July, between 6 pm and 8 pm at Nehru Centre, Worli, Mumbai.

Sangeet Natak Akademi, the national academy of music, dance and drama, Govt. of India honours personalities from various fields with awards and fellowships every year.

Among the south Indian artistes, the recipients of the awards this year are Bharatanatyam dancer Malavika Sarukkai, musicologist T.R. Subramanyam, veena artiste E. Gaayathri, mridangist Yella Venkateswara Rao and Bhagavata Mela artiste S. Natarajan. The fellowship will be presented to Kavalam Narayana Panikkar, a scholar of performing arts in Kerala.

Known for her solo performances, Malavika Sarukkai trained in Bharatanatyam under Gurus K. Kalyanasundaram Pillai, S.K. Rajaratnam, and Kalanidhi Narayanan. She was also trained in Odissi by Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and Ramani Ranjan Jena. Widely traveled, she also has several choreographic works to her credit like Krishna Ritu Krida, Fireflies and Khajuraho - Temples of the Sacred and the Secular. Malavika also received the 'Padma Shri' award from the Govt. of India.
T.R. Subramaniam is a senior musicologist. A musician himself, he is a former Professor of Music, Delhi University. In 2001, he founded the Triplicane Rasika Samaj in Madras to promote classical music and to revive the forgotten glory of the Triplicane neighbourhood.
Popularly known as Baby Gaayathri or Veena Gayathri, this musician started her career as a nine year old in the 1970's. Her father was the noted film music director, G. Aswathama and her mother Kamala an AIR veena artiste. Trained under T.M. Thiagarajan, Gayathri has numerous albums to her credit. Widely travelled she is a recipient of several awards too.
Yella Venkateswara Rao is a senior mridanga vidwan hailing from Andhra Pradesh.
A Dubai based electrical engineer, S. Natrajan is a well known Bhagavata Mela artiste. He was trained in the Bhagavat Mela natakas (dance dramas) by his father Swaminathan Iyer, grandfather Ganesa Iyer and Balu Bagavathar. He heads the Melattur Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Jayanti Bhagavata Mela Natya Nataka Sangam which hosts an annual festival in May in Melattur, south India.
A well known theatre artiste from Kerala, Kavalam Narayana Panikkar is known for his research in the 'music and tala' tradition of Kerala Sopana Sangitam. His work with Sopanam also won him the Kalidasa Samman, awarded by the Madhya Pradesh Government.
