Thyagaraja Festival at Toronto

Bharathi Kala Manram, the well known Indian cultural organization in Canada hosts the Thyagaraja Festival on 12 and 13 April 2003 in Toronto.

Started in 1969, Bharathi Kala Manram has specialised in preserving and promoting the Indian culture and traditions, with particular emphasis on South Indian traditions in Canada.

The Manram has also assisted other centers like Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary and Edmonton to hold concerts in their organizations.

In the early days, Manram started and maintained language classes in Tamil and Telugu and launched the ethnic language classes with the School Boards.

The Manram was the first organization to start the traditional Thyagaraja Music Festival in cooperation with York University in 1973.

Manram has initiated a scholarship scheme - Thyagaraja Music Scholarships - at York University, whereby 2 annual scholarships of $750 each,to York University students of Indian Music. Manram encourages the learning of carnatic music and dance by collabrating with the teachers and providing platforms for the students to perform in various Manram Events.

April 12, Saturday 8:30am - Thyagaraja Festival Day 1 at Winters College Dining Hall

April 12, Saturday 6:30pm - Vocal Concert by Aruna Sayeeram at Curtis Lecture Hall, York University

April 13, Sunday 1:00pm - Thyagaraja Fesitval Day 2 Individual Singing followed by Violin Duet Concert by R. Ganesh and
R Kumaresh at Curtis Lecture Hall, York University.

Individual singing will be scheduled at the following timings:

Saturday, 12 April, 2003, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Sunday, 13th April, 2003, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Last day for registration (through internet only) is 6 April, 2003. For more information, call Venkataraman (416) 425-8720. Only Members and their family are eligible to participate.

Besides the Thyagaraja fest, concerts this month also feature on April, 6, Sunday 4:00pm - Vocal by Ranjani Gayatri at Curtis Lecture Hall, York University and on April 15, Tuesday 7:30pm - Tamil New year Vocal Concert by Sanjay Subrahmanyan, at Vari Hall, York University.
