Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts in Tiruchirapalli in south India has started a Research Centre for offering Ph.D programme in Dance. This was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, Dr. Muthiah Mariappan on 14 December. Kundrakudi Ponnambala Adigalar also participated in this event.
Fr. George, Secretary and Principal of the college says that four students have already registered for a Ph.D in Bharatanatyam. Earlier, at the convocation held at this college, the first Master's Degree in Bharatanatyam (in Tamil Nadu) was awarded. The Bachelor's and Master's degrees in carnatic music were also awarded. Renowned carnatic musician M. Balamurali Krishna conferred the degrees on the 98 new graduates.
Kalai Kaviri College of Fine Arts is the off-spring of its parent institution, Kalai Kaviri, an Arts and Communication centre founded in 1977 in Trichy. The college, since 1996, offers full-time U.G. and P.G. degree courses in Bharatanatyam and Music, affiliated to the Bharathidasan University.
