Bombay based Carnatic vocalist and Bharatanatyam dancer VasumathiBadrinathan has recently released two carnatic music albums, titled 'Tamil Padams' and 'Swara Dhwani'.
'Tamil Padams' is an exclusive collection of old time classic padams in Tamil and 'Swara Dhwani' a traditional Carnatic repertoire.
The albums have been released in cassette and CD format by BMG Crescendo (India) Pvt Ltd.
Vasumathi says that Padams are musical compositions used mainly in classical South Indian dance but also belong to the Carnatic music repertoire. They generally explore the nayaka-nayika bhava (hero-heroine relationship) and hence provide a great scope for delineation through dance.
Vasumathi’s album traces Sringara Rasa (the emotion of love) in its myriad hues - from anguish to anger to awe. It also features devotional padams. The compositions extol the praise of lords Muruga, Shiva and Krishna. This album also has a contemporary piece composed by dance guru T.K. Mahalingam Pillai.
Swara Dhwani comprises all-time classics of Carnatic music, featuring compositions in Sanskrit, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi of Tyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar, Shyama Sastri, and Purandara Dasa. This album concludes with a Tillana composed by Vasumathi.
Both these albums are now available in major music stores across the country. Vasumathi runs SuviBadra, an institute of art and culture in Bombay. She is involved in research work on the Divya Prabandham (Tamil poetry of the 5th-9th century) and its relevance to music. She is currently on a tour of France conducting a workshop in Paris.
