Malaysia celebrates Rukmini Devi

Rukmini DeviSutra Dance Theatre, Kuala Lumpur, in collaboration with the High Commission of India presents 'Re-Presenting Rukmini Devi Arundale' a photographic exhibition on the legendary dancer Rukmini Devi between 8 and 21 March at Sutra House, KL.

The collections have been curated by S. Sathyamoorthy, the Honorary Executive Director, Centre for Contemporary Culture in India and dancer Dr. Avanthi Meduri. The exhibition will be opened by YB Dato' Seri S. Samy Vellu. Prof. Chandrasekhar (Rukmini Devi Medal recipient) will also participate.

The exhibition has already been presented in New Delhi and Chennai.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Sutra Dance Theatre will be organising two specially commissioned performances by the Kalakshetra graduates in Malaysia and Singapore. The artistic direction is by Ramli Ibrahim.

The organisers say, "Malaysia now has a number of graduates from Kalakshetra who are actively teaching Bharata Natyam in Kuala Lumpur as well as in other parts of Malaysia. Sutra will be presenting Shangita of Sangita Abivirthi Sabha , Apsara Ram Gopal, a talented artiste, Guna, who is the first Malaysian male dancer from Kalakshetra, Nada, Artistic Director of Subraanjali Dance Theatre and Girish who is part of the Singapore Fine Arts Society".

Programme
Exhibition will be open to the public from 8 March to 21 March, Mondays to Fridays, 11am - 5pm, (weekends by appointment only)

9 March: 10.00am to 12.30pm - "Re-presenting Rukmini Devi"
Lectures and Paper Presentations by eminent scholars (complimentary entry & open to all)

9 and 10 March, 8.30pm - Performance by Kalakshetra graduates
(Invitations at minimum donation of RM25 each are available at Sutra House).
