"Leela Daru - Playful Imagery"
By KutcheriBuzz staff / Madras

"Leela Daru - Playful Imagery" students of Kalavardhini Charitable Trust, Pune headed by Dr. Sucheta Chapekar gave a sterling peformance in their novel venture "Leela Daru" on the 30th of June. Something surprising was that the concept and choreography was the work of three students of Kalavardhini. Ashvini, Parimal and Arundhathi came together and spun various themes to bring a contemporary approach to Bharathanatyam.

Leela means a play and Daru means a rhythmic composition. Only Nritta was used as an effective tool to establish each theme. The programme started with Rangadvara, the whole group of six established the 3 laya-s. It was followed by invocation to the four directions and ending with a pushpanjali.

In a Margam, an Allaripu forms a very important role as this is the item where simple shollu-s are weaved into the cycle of tala in three laya-s. Here the theme of a bee and Lotus was woven in the sankirna chappu Allaripu. The concept was of Arundhati.

The next piece was Pancha Tatva - five elements. Each Tatva established itself through Shloka, alaapana and a svara. Eacth Tatva represented each jati (from the five jati-s) and one's own raga. The third piece was "Tandava Laysa".It distincetively brought the virile and delicate elements and it's amalgamation. Arundhati choreographed it.

The fourth piece brought the maximum appladus. It was Kanduka Nritya. It was not the play but the snatching of the opportunity (ball) which formed the curx of this piece and the rasikas couldn't stop raving about the piece. Ashivini and Parimal choreographed it. The fith piece was very different and contemporary. It brought out the visual form of the letters in a devanagiri script. It was titled as "Akshara Chitra". The concept and choreography was of Parimal. The followed "shollu tillana" which displayed various geometrical shapes.

The programme ended on an abstract execution on a taanam. The music direction was of Smita Mahajan, senior disciple of Dr. Suchetra Chaekar. Sucheta remarks "I am satisfied to see that my students are not just dancers but are working towards becoming good choreographers
