All India Radio's 'Dakshina Gana Surabhi'
All India Radio's 'Dakshina Gana Surabhi'On March 31, from 8.30 to 9.30 am, All India Radio, Chennai, will broadcast a special programme in which Sudha Raghunathan will render the kritis of Annamacharya. So what is so special about it?

This is the eleventh in a series of musical expositions broadcast every month, called 'Dakshina Gana Surabhi'.

Sulochana PattabhiramanIt has been put together by musician Sulochana Pattabhiraman . "Sudha will sing with the support of a full orchestra comprising flute, veena, chitra veena, violin and mridangam," says Sulochana, who has designed, tuned and orchestrated the whole effort. Sulochana, with her vast experience, saw the inextricable link of divinity and literature in all forms of South Indian music, and was inspired to execute a programme, with each session highlighting a different form of music.

With B. R. Kumar, Station Director AIR, encouraging her and suggesting that the forms be preserved for the archives of AIR, Sulochana went ahead with the project, which was approved by the Government of India. Sulochana says,. "The very first concert in this programme was rendered by Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer as a full length concert with compositions of the Music Trinity." Other concerts included verses from 'Divya Prabandangal' sung by Mani Krishnaswamy verses from Kamba Ramayanam sung by Madurai T. N. Seshagopalan singing verses, which he set to music, and Siddhar Padalgal sung by Thiruverkadu Jayaraman.

Another special was Lalgudi Jayaraman playing on the violin, kritis of Sri Thyagaraja, each one being the only one in that particular ragam. On February 27, was broadcast a collection of 'Kalyana padalgal', sung by the Mambalam Sisters and Bhagyalakshmi Suresh, comprising several traditional marriage songs, on which a couple were tuned by Sulochana. Commencing with the 'Gowri Kalyana Vaibogame', there were songs on advice for a bride, Sambandhi bhojanam, and the mangalam.

The wedding atmosphere was created by the accompanying nadaswaram played by M. K. S. Siva. "The next concert is based on Bhajana Pathathi and Namasamkeerthanam, which is also a part of South Indian music heritage," says Sulochana.

Sulochana Pattabhiraman resides at 164, Eldams Road, Alwarpet, Madras, India. Phone 4321971.
