Sri Swati Thirunal Sangita Sabha celebrated the 190th Jayanthi of the royal composer Maharaja Sri Swati Tirunal and the 61st anniversary of the sabha with fest of dance and music from 17 to 28 April, 2003 in Thiruvananthapuram.
The 12-day festival was inaugurated by H.E. Sri Sikander Bakht, the Governor of Kerala. The title of 'Gayakaratnam' was conferred on the veteran musician, musicologist and music director V. Dakshinamoorthy by his highness Padmanabha Dasa Uthradom Tirunal Marthanda Varma.
The festival was held at Sri Kartika Tirunal Theatre, the auditorium of the Sabha, which is one of the best known theatres in the country for conducting cultural programmes.
The fest featured Bombay Sisters (Vocal), Sarada Kalyana Sundaram (Harikatha), Madurai KN Renganatha Sarma (Vocal), Dr. P. Janardhanan (Hindustani Vocal), Alappey Venkatesan (Vocal), M.S. Parameswaran (Vocal), Bharathi Sivaji (Mohiniyattam), Pandalam Ganesh (Vocal), Sri Madurai G.S. Mani (Vocal), T.V. Sundaravalli (Vocal), Thiruvenkad Jayaraman (Vocal), Sri Sikkil Gurucharan (Vocal), Sri Neyyattinkara Vasudevan (Vocal), Sathur Sisters (Vocal) Dr. Srinivasan J. Menon (Vocal), Sri S.P. Ramh (Vocal) A. Anantha Padmanabhan (Veena), Prof. T. Unnikrishnan (Vocal) Sri TV Gopala Krishnan (Vocal), Gayathri Venkataraghavan (Vocal), T.V. Sankaranarayanan (Vocal) and V. Dakshinamoorthy (Vocal).
Dr. V.S. Sarma presented th Swati Tirunal Memorial lecture. Lec-dems on topics like 'Niraval', 'Significance of Gamakam in Ragam Singing' and 'Techniques in Raga Alapana' were presented. The fest attracted a huge audience.
