SPIC MACAY, founded in 1977 in India, has been taking classical music, dance and the arts to campuses, small towns and nooks of the country.
There are over 250 chapters in India. The movement has also spread roots abroad, There are more than 30 chapters of the Society in the USA and Canada.
The SPIC MACAY chapter at the University of Florida was founded in the summer of 2007 and is affiliated to the parent body (www.spicmacay.org).
This chapter has been organising music concerts / lecture demonstration since the summer of 2007.
The big concerts until now (April 2008) have been a Hindustani classical music concert by Pt. Ratan Mohan Sharma, a Carnatic concert by saxophonist Prasant Radhakrishnan and a Hindustani classical music concert and lecture demonstration: by Vaijayanthi Gopinath (co-hosted with Center for the study of Hindu Traditions)
In the spring of 2008 the SPIC MACAY organization at University of Florida hosted a lecture-demonstration on 'Padams and Javalis' followed by by Dr. Subhashini Parthasarathy and Dr. Nirmala Sundarajan. The lec-dem was followed by a regular Carnatic music concert by the duo.
