Honours for Shobha Subramanian / Maryland, U.S.A
National Council of Asian Indian Associations held the 56th Republic Day Celebrations on January 29, 2005 at Greenbelt, Maryland
(USA).
On this occasion various personalities were recognized for community service, among whom was dancer-singer Shobha Subramanian of the Washington DC area, who was awarded a plaque 'Pravasi Nruthya Nataraj Award' for her contribution to dance. The cultural program that followed featured several patriotic songs, classical & folk dances of India by local talents. Shobha and her students presented a specially choreographed piece 'Tsunami - a tribute' using lyrics written by Kaviarasu Vairamuthu which was tuned and sung by Ashwin Subramanian.
Shobha currently teaches Bharatanatyam and Mohiniattam at Jayamangala, a non-profit organization in Maryland, USA.
This function organized under the NCAIA President Shreekanta Nayak was graced by Maryland Governor Ehrlich (wearing a traditional Indian pyjama kurta!), Ambassadors from various countries and Indian embassy officials.
