Artistes to host Concerts for a Cause

This Bangalore event of Ananya raises money for medical aid to musicians

Ananya is a non-profit cultural organization established in 1995 in Bangalore for promoting, propagating and nurturing varied art forms.

Apart from regular concerts by veteran and upcoming artists in its acoustically designed auditorium, Ananya has also set up a music archive – Ananya Sangraha – which houses live recordings of over 10,000 hours by music stalwarts of yester years and of contemporary musicians, books, photographs and other education material.

Ananya has extended its support to the artists through another unique scheme, Ananya Arogyadhara. This is a health help line to musicians who are in need for support towards medical expenses.

Arogyadhara has a network of medical specialists and hospitals who have offered their services for the cause and financial support extended by the Arogyadhara Fund as decided by a committee. More than 90 musicians have benefited from this facility. Besides free consultancy, considerable rebate is offered on treatment as well as hospital expenses, if any. The extent of such assistance is decided by the committee on the merits of the case.

Attempts have been on to raise funds and strengthen the scheme. Another step in the direction is Sangeetha-Sandhya, an evening of music performances in aid of Arogyadhara. Leading artists of the state present Vocal recital, Instrumental fusion music and Percussion ensemble

Sangeetha – Sandhya will be held on Sunday, January 1, 2012 at JSS Auditorium, 1st Main Road, 38th Cross, 8th Block, Jayanagar, Bangalore, 5.00 pm onwards.

Rasikas, patrons and artistes can liberally donate for the cause.

Donations can be made in the name of Ananya Arogyadhara Nidhi, Current A/c No.0552000100011301, Karnataka Bank, Malleswaram. Donation is exempted from tax under section 80G of Income tax act 1961.

Music Fest in Bangalore from Nov.4

M. A. NARASIMHACHAR MUSIC FOUNDATION (R), Bangalore will be having its 10th annual music festival from 4th Nov. to 13th Nov. 2011.

This year violin maestro Mysore M. Manjunath will be honoured with title "GAANA VARIDHI".

Bengaluru: Focus on ragas - theme events

Ananya is organising "Allied Ragas-13" - a thematic music programme series on ragas at Ananya Sabhangana, Bangalore on 29th of May 2011 from 10 am onwards. The focus is on Abhogi, Sriranjani and Jayamanohari ragas and will be presented by Nagavalli Nagaraj.

Milestone in monthly dance recitals

Sai Arts International in Bengaluru which organises cultural shows, especially Indian classical dances, to provide a platform for young talents is celebrating the 30 year milestone and a dance series that has run for 25 months..

Its Sai Nrityotsav is an annual festival and on the 1st of every month 5 artistes perrform on stage.

Bangalore-based Ananya is hosting Sangati - Youth Music Festival at Ananya Sabhangana, Malleswaram, Bangalore from 18th to 21st May, 2011.

Tumkur: Kuchipudi Dance Feature

Bangalore-based Shambhavi Dance Ensemble is presenting Vachanopadesha, a Kuchipudi dance feature at Tumkur in Karnataka.

Vyjayanthi Kashi says that this production is a string of vachanas of Basavanna which enlighten the common man with the essential and simple truths of Hinduism found in the Upanishads. Vachanas are the expression of the human self in a holy journey to get at the divine.
They came into existence in the early decades of the 12th century, says Kashi in a note.

Choreography, concept and direction is by Vyjayanthi Kashi.

Mangalore: Workshops in Bharatanatyam, mridangam

A weeklong workshop in mridangam playing as well as in Bharatanatyam is to be held in Mangalore.

Thyagaraja Aradhana in Malleswaram, Bangalore

A Thyagaraja aradhana celebration is to be held in Malleswaram on Feb 27 (a hall on 10th Main, 17th Cross is the venue) and it will feature seniors like R K Srikantan, K R Saranathan, Neela Ramagopal flutist Narasimha murthy, S V Ramakrishnan and youths like Trichur Brois., veena artiste Geetha Navale and many others.

Nadasurabhi annual music fest in Bangalore

A six-day annual Music Festival of Nadasurabhi of Bangalore is on from 21st to 26th November.

This is the largest cultural event in Indian classical music in Koramangala, Bangalore.

This year the award of "Sangeetha Surabhi" will be awarded to mrudangam legend Umayalpuram K.Sivaraman.

Carnatic music contest for children in Nanjangud

Rasikas of classical music in Nanjangud town in Karnataka are planning to arrange a music competition for children between the age of 15 to 19 on 8th of August 2010 at Nanjangud with support from Avadhany Foundation, Bangalore and under guidance of Vid. The primary objectives of this venture are to: motivate and inspire talented children in rural areas by showcasing talents. At Sevasadana, Malleswaram. it presents Nritya Sinchana on July 23 evening. Titled 'Sita Swa-Gatham : The Untold Story....in Sita’s Words' is not just a story about a woman who bore insufferable pain to rise above all as a Goddess but her reflections upon her own life and experiences with the people she most loved and feared. Gayatri Sriram, as Sita, goes back in time to enact episodes of the Ramayana from her perspective. This dance is choreographed by Minal Prabhu.

SHIMOGA: Music, dance fest at Aghoreswara Temple

Bangalore-based arts organisation Ananya has been organising music and dance fests at temple spaces in Karnataka. One such venue has been the famed Aghoreswara Temple at Ikkeri, Sagara, near Shimoga.

On Feb.15 evening, in association with Pranathi Kala Kendra, a fest will be held at this temple campus

Carnatic vocal and instrumental and various classical forms of dance are lined up. Most artistes from Bangalore feature in this event.

** For Juniors (10-15years):

A list of three devi krithis of noted carnatic composers to be given

Participants may be asked to render the krithis either in part or full, depending on the discretion of the judges.

Neat rendition of krithis will be given importance. Raga alapana/swara kalpana are not necessary Registration fee: Rs 25/-

** For Seniors (16 - 25):

Music contests for children in Bangalore

SRI ACADEMY OF MUSIC & ARTS (SAMA) presents Anoor Ramakrishna & Ulsoor Chandrashekhar Memorial Music Competition – 2009.

The competition aims to develop and promote the performing skills of students in Bangalore and provide a platform for youngsters.

The contest will be at National High School, Basavanagudi, Bangalore – 560004 on 25 October

SAMA is promoted by Dr. Raghuram, in memory of his mother late musician M. R. Vijayalakashmi. The organization aims to spread and encourage classical music and other arts among children. The organization also intends to bring CDs and publications.

Guru R.Vedavalli to hold workshop in Bangalore

Renowned musician and guru R.Vedavalli of Chennai will be conducting a workshop on the 8th and 9th of August at Koramangala, Bangalore.

She will teach 36 ragams of Maha Vaidyanatha Sivan's 72 raga Melaragamalika composition. The duration of the workshop will be 3 hours on Saturday afternoon and 3 hours on Sunday morning. The fee for the workshop is Rs 2000.

'Thalavadyotsav' in Bangalore: July 8 to 12

The 28th edition of 'Thalavadyotsav' rolls out in Bangalore from July 8 and goes on till the 12th.
The venue is Bangalore Gayana Samaja ( K R Road)

Hosted by the Percussive Arts Centre and Bangalore Gayana Samaja, it focuses on Carnatic music's percussion artistes and their music.

Praveen Godkhnidi and M K Praneesh present a flute duet along with a host of well known percussionists on the opening evening.

On July 9 evening, there is a special 'laya vinyasa' by G. Guruprasanna on the khanjira and B. S. Arunkumar on the drums.

On July 10 evening there is an interesting lec-dem on 'Music technology and Recording Arts' by Dr. Sigmund Rothschild of the USA. That evening, there is a special clarinet concert by 'Sangita Kalanidhi' A. K. C. Natarajan with Dr. A. R. Munirathinam on the thavil.

On July 11 evening, H. S. Anasuya Kulkarni directs a programme ' Greeshma Vaibhava' which focuses on world percussions by women artistes. S. Sowmya performs later.

The finale is on Sunday morning, July 12 when awards are presented.

This year, thavil vidwan Dr A. R. Munirathinam gets the Palghat Mani Iyer Memorial Award and Mysore S. Mahadevappa gets the Palani Subramania Pillai Memorial award. There are a host of other awards.

Diamond Jubilee of Malleswaram Sangeetha Sabha: finale

The finale of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Malleswaram Sangeetha Sabha is to be held at Chowdiah Hall in Bangalore on Feb.24 evening.

Bangalore Gayana Samaja gets new head

In the general election held on Dec. 28 during the Annual General Body Meeting of the Bangalore Gayana Samaja Dr. M.R.V. Prasad (who was the vice-president) was elected as the President of the Samaja with a majority.

Achyutharao Padaki, Hanumantharao and SS Prasad were unanimously elected to the Managing Committee.

The notable feature is that the Academy Awardee and renowned music and dance critic and a popular personality Dr. M. Surya Prasad was also elected unanimously to the Managing Committee.

Dr. M. Surya Prasad has been made the new Editor of 'Gayana Samrajya', the monthly magazine of the Bangalore Gayana Samaja.

Body Talk, a language that's full of fun and play, facilitated by Anitha Santhanam in collaboration with the Shiri Dance Company will be sessions on creative movement for kids.

This programme will encourage the child to communicate through the body, enhancing the child's creative spirit through fun and simple activities. Drawing techniques from traditional physical activities such as Dance and Yoga, Body Talk focuses on both individual and group activities using rhythm, movement, music, dance and storytelling says the facilitator.

This programme is for children of ages 3 to 4 years.

Music academic sessions at Bangalore

Annual academic sessions in memory of music scholar B. V. K. Sastry will be hosted by Sri. B. V. K. Sastry Memorial committee, Bangalore Gayana Samaja and Karnataka Ganakala Parishat on Oct. 26.

Sangeeta Sampradaya Pradarshini in Kannada

Originally written in Telgu in 1904 by Subbarama Dikshitar, Sangeeta Sampradaya Pradarshini is a treatise in Carnatic music.
Vidwan Anandarama Udupa, a versatile musician and a scholar in music has translated the books into Kannada, on requested by Ananya, the Bangalore based arts organisation.
This set of books will be released on Oct. 21 at Seva Sadana, Malleswaram, Bangalore at 6 pm.

A classical dance show on Kannada TV

Bangalore based dancer duo Kiran Subramanyam and Sandhya Kiran are currently presenting a classical dance show 'Hejje Mele Hejje' on Kannada TV channel Kasturi.
This is an interactive programme based on Bharatanatyam and has been conceptualised and presented thats makes the show informative and educative, without compromising on the technique and grammar of the Bharatanatyam style, says the Kirans.
The series is conceived, directed and conducted by Kiran Subramanyam featuring senior dancers from their institution Rasika.

'Hejje Mele Hejje' is aired every week from Monday to Friday at 7.05pm.

Percussive Arts Centre's annual Thalavadyotsav from July 9

Bangalore-based Percussive Arts Centre (PAC) is hosting its annual Thalavadyotsav from July 9 to 13 at Bangalore Gayana Samaj.
The fest will also celebrate the birth centenary of the legendary maestro Palani Subramanya Pillai.
PAC was founder by the late Bangalore K. Venkataraman.
Every evening, there will be a lec-dem which focuses on the percussive arts followed by a concert. Vidwan R. K. Padmanabha opens the fest with his concert on July 9.

On July 10, vidwan Srimushnam V. Raja Rao will talk on 'The Palani Subramanya Pillai school of percussion'. This will be followed by a concert by T. M. Krishna.

On July 11, N. Amrit's lec-dem is on ' Growth and Development of Khanjari playing techniques'. The concert that follows is of R. A. Ramamani.

On July 12, Madurai T. Srinivasan talks on ' Layam' and the eoncert is of N.Vijay Siva.

The finale is on Sunday morning (July 13, 10 a.m. onwards).

The Palani Subramanya Pillai Centenary Memorial Award will be given to D. K. Pattammal while the Palghat Mani Iyer Memorial Award will be given to Madurai T. Srinivasan.

The Bangalore K. Venkataraman Memorial Award will be given to Dr. R. Sathyanarayana and the H. Puttachar Memorial Award will be given to N. Vasudev.

Prizes to young artistes who won various competitions held by PAC will also be given on this occasion.
The show ends with a percussion ensemble concert called ' Laya Vinyasa' by Vrushti group, directed by Anoor Ananthakrishna Sharma.
Mridangist V. Krishna of PAC says that friends and well wishers of Bangalore K. Venkataram are requested to contribute towards the creation of a permanent endowment which will help PAC to present this particular Award to eminent and deserving persons.

Veena Seshanna Awards

The Veena Seshanna Memorial National Award for this year will be given to veteran veena artiste 84-year-old Kalpagam Swaminthan of Chennai.
Also, the annual Swara Murthy V N Rao Memorial Award will be given to the Rudrapatna Brothers - R. N. Tharanathan and .R N. Thyagarajan.
Both awards carry a cash prize of Rs.50,000 and a citation.
Instituted by the Swara Murthy V N Rao Memorial Trust, they will be presented on July 20 at the Gayana Samaj auditoirum in Bangalore during a two-day music fest 'Veeneya Bedagu 2008'.

Ananya's youth music festival, Bangalore: June 4 to 8

Ananya's annual youth music festival and awards ceremony is on in Bangalore from June 4 to 8.
On June 5, 6 and 7, leading young artistes of Karnataka will present concerts at four different venues in the city - in Malleswaram, Rajajinagar, BSK 2nd Stage and in JP Nagar.

On June 8, at the Seva Sadana hall, Malleswaram, the awards ceremony will be held from 9.45 a.m. onwards.
Awards are to be given to vidwan Venkateshachar, Dr. K. Varadarangan and three young artistes - Hamsini Nagendra, Jyothsna Manjunath and H. L. Shivasankaraswamy.

There will also be a music concert - Navavidha Bhakthi in Sri Thyagaraja and Haridasa compositions.

Ananya's dance fest for young artistes

Ananya, the Bangalore-based arts centre, is hosting a two days dance fest on May 24 and 25 at Bharathiya Vidya Bhawan, Race Course Road, Bangalore.

On May 24, dancers Ujwal (Kuchipudi), Shweta Krishna (Odissi) and Aishwarya Nithyananda (Bharatanatyam ) will perform.

Music fest in Bangalore

The 37th Bhagavath Sri Shankara Jayanthi and Music Fest of Sri Thyagaraja Gana Sabha Trust in Bangalore is hosting a music fest from May 5 to 11.
The fest is on at Sri Vani Education Centre, (4th Main, 2nd Stage, Rajaji Nagar, Bangalore-10.) Vidwan R K Padmanabha is the president of this fest.

Various mandalis will perform at the venue in the morning while the main concerts are in the evening.
The artistes who will perform include Shubhamangala Raghunandan (vocal), M K Pranesh and Praveen Godkindi (flute), Chaitra Raghunandan (vocal), K. Subhaganga (vocal), Geetha Ramanand and Revathi Murthy (veena duet), Sweetha Venkatesh (vocal), Vidya Bhushana (vocal), R Archana (vocal), S R Vinay Sharva (vocal), Sahana Ramachandra (vocal) and Amrutha Venkatesh (vocal).

On the final day, the Sri Sankara jayanthi sangeethothsava is at 8 a.m. and at 11 a.m., Karthik Hebbar makes a multimedia presentation on 'Sri Thyagaraja's Life and Bhakthi'.In the evening, vidwan R K Padmanabha will be honoured with the 'Kalabhhoshana' title.
The vidwan will then perform at the 6.30 p.m. concert.
The Trust had also conducted music competitions for junior artistes and music students and the best will be given prizes at the fest.

World Dance Day celebration / Bangalore

Chidambara Sabha Natana Yajna is an offering through dance by well known dancers and dance students from various dance schools on World Dance Day to be held in Bangalore.

Celebrating love through music in Bangalore

Young vocalist Manasi Prasad will present a special concert to celebrate the universal emotion of love.

Taking inspiration from the universal theme, ‘Olave Jeevana Saakshaatkara’ will be a Carnatic classical music concert conceptualised by Manasi Prasad. This concert will be in the format of a traditional Carnatic music concert, but with the theme of all compositions reflecting love of one sort or another.

Carnatica Archival Centre for music and dance, Bangalore has organised a festival of Indian classical music and dance, Bharat Sangeet Utsav 2008, in Bangalore from February 7 to 10.

On the inaugural day, a concert Raga Fantasy, a confluence of Carnatic and Hindustani sangeet by veena artiste Suma Sudhindra and flutist Praveen Godkhindi will be held at 4.45 pm.
