Interviews
Srekala Bharath
Bharatanatyam dancer

Srekala BharathDancer Srekala Bharath is the new Secretary of ABHAI (Association of Bharatanatyam Dancers of India). And she has a few ideas coming. She shared them with Kutcheribuzz Reporter S. Aruna in Madras.

So you have a big job on hand now?
Well, it came as a big surprise, though I knew that my name was on the rolls. It is a huge responsibility. I already have my prior commitments as well, like my dance, my dance school and my students. I'm so busy with my dancing, besides my brother's TV company. I think all this is possible only because of God's grace and my father's blessings. He gave me all the encouragement and I miss him so much.

What do you do for the TV company?
I work behind the camera. I have been the Executive Producer for some of the projects of 'Krish Shrikanth Sports and Entertainment Television' - do all the co-ordination and organization between the artistes and the technicians.

So, what plans for ABHAI?
We want to acquire land and ABHAI should have a place of its own, with an auditorium, for all its activities. Once a year we also want to co-sponsor events, and associate ourselves with other well known organizations. With this we hope to see an increase in the number of members.

Do you plan to reach out beyond Madras?
Definitely. Besides Madras, there are only few members in the north.

What about the NRIs?
Well, it is a fact that more Indians from abroad wish to perform in India. It includes not only dancers but also musicians like instrumentalists. As suggested by our President, Narasimhachari, we are planning to host a NRI festival, which will help in two ways - their involvement will be more and ABHAI will also grow.

You are aware of the hopes of the younger dancers - they see a tough future. Will ABHAI look at them?
I know the difficulties we have gone through. To be a performing artiste, it does involve a lot of money, right from the orchestral charges, rehearsals, costumes and the programme itself. We want to particularly encourage the talented youngsters who can't afford all this. They shouldn't quit dance.
