As part of its outreach programmes, the Hyderabad-based Shankarananda Kalakshetra presented The Continuum Series.. Future Presented' in early June 2012 at Saptaparni,
In this series, its promoter, dancer-guru Ananda Shankar Jayant plans to present the next generation of artistes and create a professional platform for them to present their art.
The series started in June 2012, presenting musician Sowmya Sridhar and dancer
In this column, Ananda Shankar Jayant shares her thoughts on this project.
The 'Continuum Series .. Future Presented', is a new outreach programme that Shankarananda Kalakshetra has undertaken.
The aim is to present a talented young musician and dancer, in one evening , to provide them a professional platform for performance, and facilitate a good audience, and critical evaluation and reviews.
We plan to present 4 to 6 such programmes in a year.
The idea evolved, as I found that performance spaces and platforms for young and committed artistes is far and between, and many give up due to lack of opportunities.
Sure, this endeavour may only be a drop in the ocean but we need to begin somewhere.
This idea has support from Saptaparni, a beautiful and intimate performance space in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad with a capacity to seat about 200 people, which is being offered free of cost for this initiative.
Vijay Nirman Company Private Limited has come forward to sponsor the honoraria towards artiste payments and for the technical support.
We began this series in June with Sowmya Sridhar's ( a student of the Hyderabad Sisters ) Carnatic vocal concert, followed by my student Krithika Varsha's Bharatanatyam recital.
We plan to present artistes trained by other gurus such as Alekhya, Deepika Reddy,V S Ramamurthy and such so that we can extend this opportunity to other styles and genres.
In course of time we hope to extend this to outstation artistes too.
The idea is to nurture and mentor these young talents and give them a reason to stay with their art!
