Parvathi Ravi
Ghantasala, an acclaimed
Bharathanatyam dancer, choreographer, teacher and organizer is one whose life
is an odyssey through dance and its myriad beauties. Her artistic talent,
enriched over three decades of experience, was first nurtured by guru Kalaimamani
Krishnakumari Narendran and Padma Bhushan Kalanidhi Narayanan. With an intrinsic
flair for Abhinaya, her agile bhava and involved rasas have won her several
admirers, among critics and rasikas alike.
Having performed extensively at sabhas across India and
overseas, Parvathi has added to her repertoire of titles and awards, the prestigious
Kalaimamani from the Govt. of Tamilnadu, the Best
Natyacharya Award from Indian Fine Arts, Natya Ilavarasi from the Sri Shanmuganandha
Sabha, New Delhi, Padma Sadhana from the Padma Sarangapani Trust, vocational
excellence from the Rotary Club and many more. She is an 'A' grade artiste
of Doordarshan, besides serving as the Joint Secretary of Abhai.
Her exceptional
Pandhanallur style of dance has found _expression even on television, with
her choreography for telefilms, as well as through her dance drama Utchi Thilakam
which even today continues to enjoy widespread exposure and admiration of National audience.
Her quest for excellence resulted in Kalapradarshini, a
dance institution established to nourish youth talent towards the
sublime heights of Bharathanatyam. Founded in 1998, the school has grown in
number, and in talent, training dancers from across the seas as well.
Teaching every student personally, Parvathi imparts yoga, and vocal
classes with the assistance of Ranjit Babu and Senior Students.
Her unique solo thematic presentations and her panoramic dance dramas on a
variety of themes give her students an opportunity to perform on stage and
refine their skills and talents.
True to its
name, Kala Pradarshini has been presenting talented youngsters as well as
eminent artists in its music and dance programmes every month. For the past
ten years homage to St. Thyagaraja (Pancha Ratna Krithis) in the form of dance
was organized.
In association with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, it
organized a music-dance festival during the Chennai 'December season' which
drew enthusiastic audience response. Kala Pradarshini aims at enlarging the
scale and scope of its cultural activities and playing a major role in fostering
a vibrant cultural milieu in the region.
