Blessed with an opportunity to learn Bharatanatyam from the renowned
dancer and Guru Padma Shri Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy, Aruna has
been a disciple of Shree Bharatalaya, Chennai, from the age of eight,
since October 1984.
Besides
Bharatanatyam, she has been trained in Carnatic music, theory of
dance, Nattuvangam and choreography at Shree Bharatalaya.
She
was a recipient of the Scholarship for dance from the Centre for
Cultural Resources & Training (CCRT), Ministry of Human Resources,
Govt. of India, New Delhi, between 1990-'97.
Aruna has attended workshops in Modern Dance, Yoga, Kalaripayattu, Folk Dances of Tamil Nadu and Therukoothu as well.

Ever since her Ranga Pravesam (Maiden
Performance) in October 1991, she has accompanied her Guru
in the various lecture-demonstrations and dance festivals
in Madras, Madurai, Chidambaram, Perur, Bangalore, Vijayawada
and Kanchipuram in south India.
She has also traveled and performed with her guru at the educational
institutions in Punjab, U.P., Haryana and Andhra Pradesh as
part of the concert tour organised by the Society for Promotion
of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPICMACAY).
Her
solo performances in some of the prestigious sabhas of Chennai
include those at Bharat Kalachar, The Music Academy, Kartik
Fine Arts, Narada Gana Sabha, Nungambakkam Cultural Academy
Trust, Kalapradarshini and Lalita Kala Vedika.
She
has also performed at the famed Sri Kapaleeswarar temple in
Chennai, besides the Natyanjali festivals at the renowned
temples in Chidambaram, Kumbakonam, Nagapatnam and Thiruvarur.
She
was invited to perform at 'Nritya Pratibha', a festival for
young dancers, hosted by Sangeet Natak Akademi, the apex body
for arts in India, in August 2005 in Chennai.
The
well acclaimed dance-dramas in which she has participated
include Ramayana, Shakthi Prabhavam, Krishnam Vande Jagat
Gurum, Ekameva Na Dvayam, Vande Guham Umasutham, Shankara
Loka Shankara and Silappadhikaram choreographed by Prof. Sudharani
Raghupathy, with music direction by Vidwan Madurai N. Krishnan
and in 'Panchajanyam' choreographed by Ms. Anita Ratnam.
A
'B-Grade' Bharatanatyam dance artiste of the Doordarshan Kendra,
Chennai, Aruna has been featured in 'Adal Arangam' dance programme
on Doordarshan.
She has also been featured on Sun TV and Jaya TV.
Aruna
has performed solos in DVDs / VCDs titled 'Madura Margam',
'Madura Thillanas' and 'Navasandhi Kavuthuvam', presented
by Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy and produced by Super Audio.

Aruna has conducted master classes at Silambam (an alliance of Shree Bharatalaya) in Geneva, Switzerland.
She was on the editing team of Laghu Bharatam - Volumes
I, II & III, hand books on Bharatanatyam, published
by Shree Bharatalaya.
She
has also had the unique experience of working with visiting
students from Colgate University, New York, who train
in Bharatanatyam at Shree Bharatalaya. She has been
teaching the study groups that have visited India, every
other year from 1997 to 2005.
She
has also been a visiting faculty, at the Department
of Music, University of Madras and has taught post-graduate
students of Bharatanatyam.
She
has assisted her guru Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy who
convened 'Natya Darshan' the seminar on dance hosted
by Kartik Fine Arts, during the December Season 2002
and 2003, in Chennai.
Aruna
has presented lec-dems on Bharatanatyam in schools,
orphanages and at 'Banyan' - the institute for destitute
women, as part of the 'Janabharatham' project of Natyarangam,
Chennai.
She has been featured in a documentary, as a sishya
of her guru Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy, who is a disciple
of guru Shri. K.P. Kittappa of Thanjavur. This documentary
produced by the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training
(CCRT), New Delhi, describes the 'Guru-sishya' tradition
in the arts.
For six years, till September 2006, she contributed as an arts journalist at KutcheriBuzz, the online and print magazine on South Indian classical music and dance.
At present she pursues a career in Bharatanatyam as a performer, choreographer and teacher and assists her Guru Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy at Shree Bharatalaya, Chennai.
