This is a unique event of five leading percussionists from different parts of India joining together for a concert.
Panchavadyam is a percussion ensemble concept and is conceived by Guru Kaaraikkudi Mani who will ead the ensemble in mridangam along with other artistes, Bickram Ghosh from Calcutta on the tabla. Ravishankar Upadhyaya of Delhi on the pakhwaj, Sankaran Kutty Marar from Kerala on the chendai and Tiruppangur Muthukumaraswamy from Mayavaram on the thavil.
The five tempos of Carnatic music - Chatusram, Tisram, Khandam, Misram and Sankeernam will be played by the atistes in a prominent percussion instrument of their region.
After this all the artistes will combine forces leading to a Grand Finale.
"The purpose of this programme is to bring out the Tonal quality of the different percussion instruments. This also gives the artistes to showcase their improvisations and their expertise in the instruments. It also gives the audience a chance to hear the different permutations and combinations used in percussion." says Kaaraikudi Mani. "The approach to this Unique concept is purely classical," adds Mani.
This ensemble will perform at the Music Academy on Jan. 1, 2009 after the sadas.
