Dr. R. Ganesh : Music for a cause

Dr. Ganesh, the Carnatic vocalist and prathama sishya of Maharajapuram Santhanam is a resident of K K Nagar. Kartik Fine Arts sabha based in Mylapore selected him for the 'Isai Peroli' award at this year's music festival.

Ganesh is also the man behind 'Irai Isai Payanam', a project that he devised to raise funds for the renovation of Arulmigu Pushpakuchambikai samedha Shri Shringeeswarar Temple at Meppedu, 25 kms from Poonamallee. Arcot Road Times' reporter V. Soundara Rani spoke to him about his work, his music.

Why did you take up the Meppedu temple project?

I am passionate about giving back to society and rededicating the gift (given to me) to God. Music is a tool to accomplish the task. It is a lesson I derived from the Nayanmar's service to Lord Siva.

And this is a temple dedicated to the cause of music and has a lot of scriptures pertaining to music.

How do you go about raising funds?

I sing at houses on request, the krithis of their choice. I also perform for a small group of rasikas provided the minimum contribution is ten to fifteen thousand rupees. The cheque is passed on to the authorities of the temple.

Any idea of the number of concerts and total funds you have raised so far?

More than 40 concerts have been dedicated to the cause and I have collected funds to the tune of Rs. 7.1 lakhs. 80 % of the renovation work is over.

Who else is with you?

I have Madurai Balasubramanian or V. V. Srinivasa Rao on the violin and either Umayalpuram Mali or Chidambaram Balashankar on mridangam to accompany me. They have been supportive.

How do other musicians look at this project?

Many musicians like O. S. Thiagarajan, Vijay Siva and A S Murali have come forward to participate and take my place in when I am preoccupied with other things.

Any unforgetable incident?

I have already sung in Dubai and raised a sizeable sum and one more trip is due.
I was moved by the response from the guests at a grahapravesam. On hearing about the project, they were overwhelmed and contributed whatever they could. The building contractor of that house also got impressed and donated 50 bags of cement and sand and is still doing whatever he can.

How do you draw a line between fund raising and other concerts?

We oblige people who want to contribute for the cause. Other concerts are for my personal gains.

How do you manage your time for you also work fulltime?

I sing even in the mornings and at any time of the day. After all, nothing is impossible with the given 365 X 24 X 7.

Dr. Ganesh resides at 436/1, Ramaswamy Salai, K K Nagar, Chennai. Phone 2366 3340.
